Bender's Romanian Cemetery re-opens after renovation

Pridnestrovie's government has finalized the reconstruction of the renovated military cemetery in Bender. Although known as the Romanian cemetery, it is the final resting place for soldiers from a total of six different countries. Romania was the only country which didn't collaborate with the restoration work.

Igor Smirnov:

The President of Pridnestrovie is willing to sit down with Moldova and discuss future relations. "But we have nothing to talk about before Moldova begins to honor its own earlier signed agreements with us," he says. According to Igor Smirnov, a total of 148 previously signed documents between the two sides have been ignored by Moldova.

Transdniester peacekeepers continue with Russian participation

After Russian suspension of the CFE treaty, no troop pullout is imminent and Transdniestria peacekeeping operations will continue with Russian participation. Four sides currently supply peacekeeping troops to the multilateral force. In addition, the 56-member state OSCE also participates in the peacekeeping process with military observers.

Free trade: Transdniestria cancels import duties on Moldovan goods

In a unilateral move for free trade with Moldova, the Transdniestrian parliament has abolished a series of import duties on Moldovan goods. Analysts believe that increased business and trade flows will lead to more contacts, cooperation and better understanding between the two sides. Moldova has not eased restrictions on Transdniestria, however, and still maintains its economic blockade against the unrecognized country.

ndependence Day celebrations in cities throughout Transdniestria

Stanislav Khazheyev, PMR's Minister of Defense, said in his official independence day speech that Pridnestrovie, its people and its armed forces have successfully defended their right to live on their own land.

" - On 2 September 1990, the people decided to form their own own republic. This young state had to pass some heavy tests very quickly," recalled Stanislav Khazheyev.

Russia: First, solve older self-determination issues before Kosovo

A senior Russian leader urges the international community to sort out Palestine, Northern Cyprus and other unresolved conflicts before dealing with Kosovo. Konstantin Kosachev says Russia opposes artificial deadlines for Kosovo which don't exist in similar conflicts. Pridnestrovie has waited for a solution for more than twice as long as Kosovo.

Press freedom curtailed as Moldova shuts down TV station

Freedom of expression suffered another blow in Moldova as the authorities pulled the plug on TVR1. The Romanian-language TV station says the shutdown is illegal and it has a valid license to broadcast until 2011. In neighboring Transdniestria, Western channels are freely available and no TV stations have been restricted from broadcasting.
